Motherhood Is /

Motherhood is simply an experience - 
not a gift to be kept and bottled forever 
but a river flowing over my hands and feet 
in the warmth of the day
Sometimes rocky and rough beneath,
sometimes smooth and steady 
An experience to behold and partner in
in all it’s joys and fears
And what I must do is trust 
through the gift of today 
that all it holds in the mess and the wonder
is enough
I can only experience what is before me,
soaking in and relishing in the good and the pain
knowing it too is intended to pass,
just like the water flowing freely over me
Not held, not kept, not mine - 
but felt, and then released 
And in the process, making me new every day
as it slowly smooths out my rough edges too 
just as the stones beneath my feet are being formed

It is all enough.
